Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, is an operation where excess tissue and skin are removed from the breasts. The smaller breasts are then reshaped and the nipples are repositioned.

Breast reduction surgery can relieve the discomfort caused by large breasts, such as back, neck and shoulder pain and grooves in the shoulders from bra straps, excessive sweating, rashes and skin infections under the breasts.

There are different options for breast reduction surgery which are determined by the amount of skin and breast tissue that need to be removed. This will determine the location and extent of final scars on the breast. There are two main types of breast reductions: one that will result in an “anchor type” of incision and a limited short scar technique, otherwise known as a “lollipop” incision. The areola is also decreased in size at this time and the nipple is raised to a more appealing and attractive location.
